| Sadly, in the time we have available, it’s not realistic for us to provide you with detailed information for all of the chimpanzees at Tacugama. Instead we have chosen eight ambassadors to represent all of those resident at the sanctuary. Please review their short profiles below and select the one that you would like to adopt. We’ll make sure that your support is shared equally with all of our chimpanzees here! (If the link doesn’t work for you then please see the information at the bottom of this page) |

CHICA![]() |
Chica was brought to Tacugama in February 2006 when she was one year old. A local man bought her from a poacher for $30 and kept her as a pet for four months until he heard that it is illegal to keep chimpanzees in captivity. He then decided to hand Chica over the sanctuary. She is a very independent chimp and loves to play on her own with sticks and on the ropes. She gets along with everybody and at the same time stays away from trouble. | Adopt CHICA - click here to send your details |

| GAURA |
Gaura was a very tiny chimp, no more than 2.5 kg in weight and less than a year old when he was brought to Tacugama from eastern Sierra Leone in January 2008. Gaura was frail and so thin that had to be dressed in pyjamas at night to keep him warm. After a lot of close care and attention Gaura is growing into a strong, loving and mischievous infant. He is still too small to join the bigger infant group and shares his den with Tombo, who rarely leaves his side. | Adopt GAURA - click here to send your details |

JULIE![]() |
Julie, born in 1988, is one of the oldest chimps at Tacugama and along with Bruno was partly responsible for the sanctuary’s inspiration. A Scottish businessman originally owned Julie but when he left the country he simply left her in a cage. Luckily Bala had heard about Julie, then only 2 years old, and took her into his care. Julie has a beautiful, quiet and serious nature with remarkable maternal instincts; she always shares her food with the younger ones and has earned the nickname Mother Theresa. Julie gave birth to Jumu in 2004. Julie is extremely intelligent and full of wisdom and respected by everyone at Tacugama. | Adopt JULIE - click here to send your details |

KOUZE![]() |
Kouze was owned by an officer of the United Nations peace keeping mission in Sierra Leone. After some significant difficulties in getting access to him, this high profile toddler was finally officially confiscated on the 19th August 2005. Living on UN rations, Kouze was in good health and a strong two and a half year old chimp. He is now fully integrated to one of our family groups. He is extremely cute-faced and photogenic and a grand master of the ropes; his amazing confidence and balance are a sight to behold! He is becoming one of the naughty guys in the group and taking advantage of his angelic expression. | Adopt KOUZE - click here to send your details |

| NAPPER |
Napper is a female chimp of about 9 years old. She was rescued in 2001 as a small baby. Her former owner was a Sierra Leonean soldier who kept her as a pet. She was in very poor shape, half her body paralysed by unknown earlier injuries. With time, Napper has recovered much mobility in her limbs but has been left with a noticeable limp when she walks or runs. She is well integrated in Mama Lucy’s group and is able to lead a normal life with the others. She is a sweetheart and loves to play with the younger chimpanzees. | Adopt NAPPER - click here to send your details |

PEEWEE![]() |
Peewee is a young but strong charactered female chimpanzee. She was around two years old when she was handed over to Tacugama on the 3rd January 2007. She was very subdued and in such a pathetic condition that we feared for her life. She was anorexic and had several shotgun pellets embedded throughout her body, including one fragment that has permanently blinded her left eye. With the support of our care staff she has recovered well. She’s built a very close, dominant relationship with Jerusalem. In spite of her handicaps, she can be a bully to the younger ones. | Adopt PEEWEE - click here to send your details |

| URGENT |
Urgent arrived with us in July 2008 at the approximate age of 15. She was confiscated in the south east of Sierra Leone. When she was found Urgent was kept tethered to a small tree on a short chain with almost no shade and the area was covered with excrement. She had been like this for at least eight years and had probably been captive for most of her life. She is coping well as we introduce her to her fellow chimps; she has a gentle but determined personality. | Adopt URGENT - click here to send your details |

ZOYAS![]() |
Zoyas was rescued in December 2005 from a remote village near the Liberian border. His mother was killed by a hunter and the infant abandoned. At the age of one and a half Zoyas arrived in a terrible state. He was wounded, dehydrated, weak and mentally traumatized. He had a chronic injury near his left eye that never healed. X-rays revealed gunshot fragments lodged in his skull and neck. Following medical advice we have left them in place as the surgery could be more damaging for him. Probably because of his early trauma, he never fully trusts people. Now he is integrated in the infant group, he has become very confident and playful. | Adopt ZOYAS - click here to send your details |
