And Jessica makes 92!
Category: Chimpanzee, Quarantine, Tacugama | Date: Dec 16 2008 | By: tacugama
Sadly we have to report the arrival of another very young chimpanzee at Tacugama - Jessica was brought to us late last week by the Gola Forest project to whom she was handed by her keeper in a sack. They quickly made life more comfortable for her before bringing her to the sanctuary.

As you can imagine she was very confused and distressed. We estimate that she’s about 14 months old and that she was only very recently separated from her mother - she’s very wary of humans and, from her quarantine den, calls all the time to the other chimps at the sanctuary. She’s fortunately in reasonable health and gradually learning to trust Mama Posseh as she tries to replace the love and care that her natural mother would have given to Jessica.

The only comfort we have at the moment is that at least these small chimps are finding their way to us quickly but much more work is still needed to stop them losing their families in the first place.
Little Bai Nyaa, who came to us almost two months ago, is making steady progress in quarantine. She’s putting on weight and growing in confidence. Hopefully it won’t be long before she can join Mac as a playmate - poor Mac doesn’t get much support from Gaura and Tombo who continue to be inseparable.
You may remember our recent blog where we reported increased evidence of hunting in our Western Area Peninsula Forest Reserve. We’re please to say that we’ve since hosted a visit by a recently formed joint patrol unit that is increasing law enforcement in the Reserve area - made up of wildlife guards, police and army. They came to us to learn more about chimpanzees and also the problems that we are facing and have since been visibly taking positive action to curb illegal activity in the area.

Poor little Jessica. At least she is pretty good shape and was confiscated quickly. These poor babies break my heart. They belong in the forest with their mothers! But we all know that. I hope Bai Nyaa and Mac can be together soon so they can comfort each other like Gaura and Tombo do. As for little Jessica, Mama Posseh will take excellent care of her and Jessica will soon learn that she is safe and can trust Mama to protect and love her. These babies could not have a better Mama except their own.

Oh, by the way, wonderful news about the patrol unit and their efforts to help curb illegal activity. Coming to Tacugama to learn about the chimpanzees and how they can help shows that little by little people are willing to do what they can to make a difference. It is a positive sign that the work you do is important and the message is reaching people. Thank God!

Yes, poor lil babies I can’t even imagine what they have seen their mothers go through ……I hope they can thrive in the sanctuary but they should be in the forest with their families! Just sickening……..they are so adorably cute!

This is so sad. Jessica must be heartbroken and homesick. Mama Posseh is a miracle worker with the babies so I’m sure she’ll help mend little Jessica’s broken heart. I just don’t understand how humans be so viciously cruel to non-human animals. I don’t understand.

I don’t think we will ever to be able to understand the violence against animals or humans Sheryl. It’s appalling and heartbreaking and because it continues I am grateful for sanctuaries who take these orphans in and give them a family again. I will continue to pray that one day we will see the end of the bush meat trade forever!!!

[…] Jessica is the smallest and the most adventurous – she’s really enjoying having lots of new spaces to explore and leading the rest of the chimps as she climbs higher and further from Mama Posseh. […]
