Santos the artist has completed his beautiful work improving the visitor areas within the sanctuary with his artwork! We are proud of his creations and would like to share some of them with you. The school kids seem to love them and Mosses and Willie are inspired to tell more stories to the kids and visitors standing in front of the murals.

Here in Sierra Leone we are in the middle of the dry season which goes from November to May. The Harmattan winds from the Sahara blow dry and charged with sand. Everywhere is dusty and dry. It is interesting to note that usually around the end of January or beginning of February we have one single day of heavy tropical rain. Just ONE and it was last week! I don’t know about meteorology and the reasons why this happens, but it is very welcome water. The following morning the sky was bright blue, fresh and not a grain of dust. Of course the chimps seem to enjoy this special single wet day too. Chimps seem to enjoy performing rain dances, and even though I didn’t see them doing it, I could tell they had a muddy playful time….

Love the murals, so colorful and lively. My favorite is the 3rd one, beautiful. Very interesting about this one day of rain in the midst of the dry season, our chimps look so happy! Perform looks downright excited. Hope little Gaura can take part in all the action soon. Great post!

Wonderful murals! Our chimps are children playing and singing in the rain. Tacugama is a beautiful and cozy environment for humans and chimps. Thank you.

I will love to see my baby little Gaura healthy, singing and dancing in the rain.

The murals are beautiful, as are the muddy chimps. Looks like they had a good time playing in the rain.

The bird is a Picathartes or white necked Rockfowl, only found in 5 West African countries including Sierra Leone and listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red list of threatened species.
